WMS Group adopts warranty code of practice

Business-to-business warranty specialists the WMS Group have today announced their adoption of Motor Codes’ government driven Vehicle Warranty Products code of practice.

This code regulates the advertising and sale of warranty policies, outlines exactly what consumers can expect from the claims process and commits code subscribers to producing policy documentation written in plain English. It also ensures that consumers are not subjected to high-pressure selling.

WMS Group business development director Eric Stone commented: “The code is being implemented across all of our own insured products – WMS warranty cover (mechanical breakdown insurance), the Safe and Sound warranty, and MOT cover. Only trusted warranty companies are eligible to join, so we are honoured that Motor Codes accepted our application. WMS are regulated by the FCA and underwritten by one of the world’s leading underwriters, Am Trust, but this enables us to add another level of consumer protection while showing complete transparency.”

The voluntary code of practice launched with more than half of the UK’s warranty providers signed up at inception, bringing protection to around three million policy holders. It will work harmoniously with the New Car Code and Service and Repair Code already administered by Motor Codes. All three codes are overseen and approved by the Trading Standards Institute, which means that consumers can be sure of receiving the highest standards of service and obtain expert, independent support if they need advice. They are also backed by a free-to-access advisory service endorsed by Citizens Advice.

Consumer minister Jenny Willott MP commented: “This new code should give peace of mind to consumers that when something goes wrong they will be dealt with fairly and transparently by those businesses which have signed up.”

For Chris Mason, managing director at Motor Codes, the launch of this latest approved code paves the way towards delivering a one-stop advice shop for car owners: “Motor Codes has created a safe shopping environment when it comes to cars. With new cars covered, an approved garage finder and online reviews system and now this rubber-stamping for warranty providers, it’s never a lottery when it comes to spending on your car, as long as you choose a Trading Standards-approved business.”
