In brief:

  • Subaru launches 5 year/100,000 mile car warranty to replace previous three year offer
  • ETCo aftercare package replaced due to customer demand

Subaru UK has taken the decision to change its aftercare programme on new cars, in response to feedback from dealers and customers. Since January 1 2013, all new Subaru cars (excluding WRX STI) now come with a new, longer five year/100,000 mile car warranty which replaces the previous car warranty of 3 years/60,000 miles. This is to replace their ETCo (‘Everything Taken Care of’) package, which launched at the start of 2011 but had been recently suspended due to a lack of consumer demand.

Haydn Davies, Subaru UK Marketing Director explained the change. “Feedback received from our dealer network and their customers has confirmed that the ETCo package, though designed to be a ground-breaking and industry-leading offer, was less attractive to the majority of prospective buyers than a longer warranty. Research also showed that customers were not using the services offered by the ETCo package effectively. However, longer warranties are considered as more valuable and so to demonstrate that we listen to our customers and have faith in Subaru’s superb long term reliability and durability, we have introduced a five year warranty.”

The manufacturer anti-corrosion car warranty remains unchanged at 12 years. Additionally, any customer who bought a new Subaru before December 31 2012 will remain entitled to the benefits offered by the ETCo programme. Full details of the new warranty, including terms and conditions, can be found on the Subaru UK website at www.subaru.co.uk.

We say: It is a shame that Subaru’s ETCo offer has had to be suspended, which included minor dent and scratch repairs; alloy wheel repairs; monthly wash ‘n’ vac; annual full valet; lost keys replacement and  an insurance excess cover contribution. However, with customers now keeping hold of their vehicles for much longer, a five year car warranty will undoubtedly hold a greater value, especially as the chances of mechanical or electrical problems greatly increase during the third and fourth years of ownership. For Subaru dealerships, this provides them with an extra opportunity to bring the customer back for repair work whilst enhancing their customer care processes so we believe this can only be a good move.

The WMS Group also have a range of affordable extended car warranty plans that can be used as a negotiation tool ready to click in once the manufacturer’s warranty expires. For more information on our products, click here.
